Ghost signs

As with our shop front photos, these snaps of old ghost signs have been hanging around the Yawn studio for a good while. They are the result of keeping an eye peeled at all times for these snap shots into the past.
Once upon a time hand painted wall adverts were the most effective way in which big companies publicised their product at street level. In the years since the art of producing them became extinct the vast majority have been either been painted over or the wall that was once their home has been knocked down. Now only a few survive making spotting one a relatively difficult process (especially a well preserved one).

The effect over time that the elements and pollution have had on these adverts is really pleasing, washing the typography and imagery back and leaving a retro feel to the adverts. These weathered throw backs to the past are now unofficially known as Ghost signs (good name) and collecting photographs of them has become a gentle obsession of Yawns.
In keeping with the theme of the content we have given the photos a further vintage effect, leaving them looking really nice. Our intention for the photographs is to continue building our collection until we have enough to compile a small book. But as you well know these things take time... watch this space.

  1. You can find a collection of over 700 examples by following the archive link on this site. Let me know more about the book, I'd be interested in what you're planning.
